The right to education for foreigners
Foreigners living in Spain who wish to renew or apply for long-term residence, with minors of schooling age in their charge in Spain must certify their schooling by way of a report , in accordance with Art. 9.4 of Organic Law 2/2009 dated 11 December amending Organic Law 4/2000, on Right and Freedoms of Foreigners residing in Spain and their integration.
All foreign minors, aged between 6 and 16, are entitled to:- Basic, compulsory education (Primary and Secondary) free of charge
- the corresponding academic certification
- Access to the public system of grants and aid
Early Childhood Education
This type of education is voluntary and non-compulsory. It is offered free of charge at public schools and some semi-private educational centres.
Non-Compulsory Education
Foreigners residing in Spain are entitled to non-compulsory education and also:
- the corresponding academic certification
- access to the public system of grants and aid
- Foreigners residing in Spain of more than eighteen years of age have the right to access post-compulsory education and the corresponding academic certification.
Teaching or Research Activities
This type of academic activity is recognised by the government. Foreign residents may also create and manage related Centres.
How do I register my child?
The registration period and your child's registration usually begins mid-April. Children can also register throughout the academic year whenever they move to a given town/city.
Documents: The school will provide you with a list of documents required for registration.
The centre should be notified if the family has any characteristics that make them eligible for special treatment (large family, or a family member with a disability)
- Application for registration provided by school
- Photocopy of DNI (Spanish Identity Card) or passport of parent or legal guardian
- Photocopy Spanish Family Record (libro de familia) or equivalent
Immigrant Student Help Office (Oficina de Acogida al Alumno Inmigrante)
The characteristics and functioning of this Help centre allow it to be in permanent, ongoing contact with parents with an aim to:
- Provide parents with the following information about their children's schooling:
- Where to go
- Registration process
- The stage, level or year suitable for their children
- Access to training programmes part of Vocational Training
- Level testing, etc.
- Provide information about grants and aid; facilitate paperwork involved in applying for aid.

Provide families with information about associations, institutions and organisations, with an aim to facilitate their learning of the official languages of the Valencian Region, their relationship with their environment and to improve their social inclusion.
- Provide information on procedures to follow to request assistance for any special educational needs.
